Changes to how GPs provide service – How will it affect me?

22-03-2026 By Winifred Limbachia (Chief Medical Administrator)

From 2nd April 2026, your GPs will not be able to refer you to a specialist without seeking ‘Advice and Guidance’. This may cause delays when requesting a referral.

When you ask for a referral, GPs will now need to contact the specialist to ask them for advice on your case. Only when the specialist’s advice, investigations and suggested treatments have been proven inappropriate, then you will be referred. This will increase the workload for GPs as the NHS attempts to get a hold on hospital wait times.

If you are concerned about these changes, please get in touch with us and we will help you get seen on the NHS.
